BESIDES "ugly"
Real quick, follow this link to vote in this poll and then check out the results. If you're like the rest of the internet, you'll be very surprised that it's not 100% on whatever colors you saw. WHYYYY??!?
This is an (accidental) optical illusion, but usually that means everyone sees the same thing, like this one:
As hard as it is to believe, both A and B are the exact same color.
If you uploaded this to photoshop and pull the colors, they'll be the same. Basically, your eyes are tricking you because of the shadow - you see a pattern of a checkerboard, and your mind fills it in like it expects. Also the "A" square is lighter than the 4 dark blocks around B, which means B is also lighter than them - your mind just makes it even lighter because of the pattern and the shadow. Check out this video to see it live:
What does this have to do with that stupid dress though? The color perception is a similar adjustment made in our own sub-conscious brain before we even realize it. Silly brain, making decisions for us. Watch this quick video:
Perception modifies reality
It's also been suggested, and my quick informal polls of my friends say the same, that if you have very light-sensitive eyes (meaning you squint a lot in sunlight and you see pretty well in the dark), then you probably saw blue/black. If your eyes aren't very sensitive (poor night vision), then you might have seen white and gold - is this accurate for you? Let me know in the comments section!
Good thing nobody usually makes life or death decisions by telling bad guys the color of a dress. Or else we would be screwed...
