Sound Effects

Does sound have the ability to move objects? Think about that for a second - does sound physically move other things?

Yelling at computers definitely works, right?

There's one main thing that sounds DEFINITELY move: your eardrum! Your brain decodes your eardrum vibrations all of the time, that's how we hear things. Check out my previous post on sound here if you want more info.

So what about moving other objects? Turns out, it takes a LOT of sound to move less sensitive objects, but it can be done:

You might argue that the speaker vibrations are causing the motion - but those are also causing the sound!

You probably don't think of sound happening in waves, but these videos are proof. Everything comes in waves - some scientists even argue that matter itself is just a specific type of wave. The patterns that form with some of these are especially interesting; here's a more scientific approach:

At the end of the above video, the performers put on chain mail and hang around a "Tesla Coil," which transmits fairly harmless but visible electricity. Why would the chain mail protect them instead of electrocuting them? Electromagnetic Shielding is a topic for another time, but it's the same reason that you are safe inside a car that's struck by lightning...
