Fog and Fire! (unrelated)

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be inside a cloud? Well, turns out you've probably been in one! Fog is just a cloud at ground level, and it happens because the air is so cold that the water droplets in the air condense and become visible. Remember that fog a couple of weeks ago? Someone made an awesome timelapse video, check it out...Portland is ridiculously beautiful.

This is the Unipiper and he's ridiculous (video here)

Temperature is an interesting concept - when the temperature changes, many other things change with it - and it's all based on the movement of the molecules within. When you measure temperature, you're literally measuring how fast the molecules of the object are moving.

Notice how there's the same number of molecules in each, but the density is different (source)

The changing density of the molecules at different temperatures is why 'hot air rises' - it's literally less dense, because the same amount of material is taking up more space! This is also how lava lamps work, by heating the bottom stuff, it gets less dense so it rises in the fluid; then, at the top, it cools again, condenses, and sinks.

These are called 'convection currents' and they happen inside the earth too, because the center is so hot! This footage is also sped up, it's a slower process than this.

So when you burn yourself on a hot stove, it's like the molecules PUNCH YOU ON THE HAND because they're vibrating so fast. The stove doesn't turn into a liquid though, because it's designed not to - different materials have very different melting points. But your skin is used to being a steady temperature, adding too much heat to it will change it significantly!

Don't twerk against an unlocked door. Or better yet, just don't twerk.

Finally, here's an awesome (huge) picture of the full possible range of temperatures; see if you can find the temperature of a candle, it might surprise you what it's hotter than...

  1. Wow, that video of the fog was really cool. It almost looked like an ocean from above.
